California Galleries

Big Sur, Redwoods & Highway 1 : Big Sur in October is supposed to be ideal. I got a half-and-half deal during my week, with fog and endless rain for half the week and sunshine at the end of the week (making it hard to leave). The cloudy weather worked well for hiking and shots of the redwoods. One the 36-hour storm began, I didn't get a single picture. Everything was in dense fog and soaking. Eventually things improved and I had a great time overall.

I tried to visit the classic locations (Hurricane Point, McWay Falls, Pfeiffer Beach) but also visit some others that are less known. These include the Old Coast Road, Soboranes Point, Garrapata State Park, Millcreek Canyon, Pacific Bluffs and Esalen. These shots go in roughly chronologic order. Please enjoy.

Death Valley : I first visited Death Valley in October 2006 and loved the vast open spaces and incredible landscapes. I'd read about the Racetrack and wanted to go there for several years. It was spellbinding to me. Many other fascinating and one-of-a-kind landscapes are found here: Badwater, Ubehebe Crater, Zabriski Point Badlands, Artist's Paintpots, Stovepipe Well Dunes, the Grandstand and much more. Because there's so much to see, this is a large gallery but I hope you enjoy seeing this wonderful place through my eyes.

Wanting to go again, I finally made it back in January 2009 and visited the Racetrack again. Wow, is it awesome. Some of the rocks were familiar even. I also visited Dante's view and had a great time shooting the enormous salt flats far below with a telephoto lens. Stovepipe wells sand dunes were also amazing. Enjoy with a glass of water. :)

Yosemite : I traveled to Yosemite National Park, to one of the birthplaces of landscape photography, and was shocked at the size of El Capitan. No picture can do it justice. What a fabulous location! The Mist Trail by Nevada and Vernal Falls gives a great commune with nature. The farther I hiked, the smaller the crowd until it was just me. Another favorite was fern falls.

San Luis Obispo & California : California has incredible diversity in the landscape, people, architecture, wildlife and more. This Gallery highlights some of the places in California that I have seen, primarily centered around San Luis Obispo (my wife's hometown). Avila Beach, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Montana de Oro, and Morro Bay are all represented here. My San Francisco pics are also here because I don't have a gallery yet for them.
