Gordon Smith  > Landscapes > New Mexico > Bisti Badlands
Bisti Badlands is part of the Bisti/De Na Zin Wilderness area. My pilgrimage to the Bisti Badlands included two journeys for sunsets, a sunrise and a full moonrise. The lunar landscape hypnotized and delighted to no end. One could explore here for weeks without seeing everything. I took a flashlight and GPS to help find my way in before sunrise and find my way out after sunset. Believe me, it's profoundly quiet and isolated.

Gordon Smith > I wandered far north on the Bisti wilderness to find these stone wings. I had seen pictures of them and was determined to discover them. After climbing multiple hills in the badlands, I finally saw them in the distance and got there just as the sun was setting. If you would like some directions, e-mail me for more information.

Gordon Smith > At sunrise, I was in a large field of hoodoos and shot this double-headed hoodoo as the sun hit.

Gordon Smith > Bisti Arch #1. This arch is only about 2 feet tall. Amazing and delicate.

Gordon Smith > This arch is about a half a mile north of the Egg Factory. It's a great sunrise location.

Gordon Smith > At the "Egg Factory" section, about 1 mile in from the parking area, many sculpted eggs are hatching in the most amazing formations. This was a wonderland for me. I stayed for the sun to completely set, shooting nonstop. After the sun set, I used a headlamp and GPS to find my way back to the car a mile away. The eerie quiet of this place in the dark is quite an experience.
