Gordon Smith  > Landscapes > Utah > Zion
Zion National Park is close to my heart and home. I live only a 40-minute drive from Zion National Park and find my way over there many times a year: for a monring hike, an overnight campout, a day-trip, and sunrises (my favorite!). I feel extremely fortunate to have this beautiful place so assessible. Some of the great places pictured here include: Tower of the Virgin, Zion Narrows, Subway hike, Kolob terraces, Kolob Arch, Spry Canyon, and several other unnamed but spectacular sites. Because I go there so often, there are several pictures from several areas in this park. The park is very large. More recent pictures are near the beginning.

Please see the Subway Canyoneering Hike report and pictures for this particular section of Zion and the adventurous trip that it is.

Gordon Smith > Applying for a permit for the Subway hike can be a dangerous and uncertain experience. I applied for a permit for the middle of April, expecting the weather to be mild but pleasant. A freak late-spring storm brought snow and chilling winds instead. Although the hiking had cooler weather, the snow and higher water level made the waterfalls profoundly beautiful in a way that I've not ever seen before in pictures.
Gordon Smith > Snow was falling hard and fast, but the moving water didn't allow it to accumulate much.
Gordon Smith > Compare the water level in this photo to another shot from 2 year earlier (later in this gallery) and you can see how much more water was flowing this trip.

Gordon Smith > Subway Pools. This was taken while snow and wind swirled quickly through this narrow canyon. The shutter speed of my camera was very slow (because of darkness) and the snowflakes just don't show up.

Gordon Smith > I had to hold on to my tripod firmly because the flow of water in the depth of the water here wanted to carry me and my camera away.

Gordon Smith > I felt a panoramic crop of this picture helped to emphasize the relationship of the interesting rock here on the left and in the canyon wall on the right.
