Gordon Smith  > Landscapes > Utah > Zion
Zion National Park is close to my heart and home. I live only a 40-minute drive from Zion National Park and find my way over there many times a year: for a monring hike, an overnight campout, a day-trip, and sunrises (my favorite!). I feel extremely fortunate to have this beautiful place so assessible. Some of the great places pictured here include: Tower of the Virgin, Zion Narrows, Subway hike, Kolob terraces, Kolob Arch, Spry Canyon, and several other unnamed but spectacular sites. Because I go there so often, there are several pictures from several areas in this park. The park is very large. More recent pictures are near the beginning.

Please see the Subway Canyoneering Hike report and pictures for this particular section of Zion and the adventurous trip that it is.

Gordon Smith > Opposing forces.
Gordon Smith > Grasses and the Great White Throne. Although this is a major landmark in Zion National Park, not a lot of people will take a picture of it that looks very good. I have not seen many that capture it well. This is my attempt. The Pipe Organ is on the right.
Gordon Smith > Vertical shot of the Great White Throne
Gordon Smith > Coal Pitts wash. I hoped to get a good picture of the East Temple from this location but it is not well seen. Instead I got a fairly unremarkable butte but it does show the nice open areas around Zion Canyon. I also found beautiful wildflowers so the trip was not entirely in vain.
Gordon Smith > Zion wildflowers. I found this after the sun went down but spent quite a bit of time as the darkness was beginning to settle, working with different compositions with these beautiful flowers.
Gordon Smith > Interesting root shot with a 90 mm tilt shift lens to help keep the plane of focus slanted.

Gordon Smith > This picture was also shot with a 90 mm tilt shift lens. I tilted it quite a bit so that the water would be in focus looking away. However you will notice that branches and trees in different distances from the camera will be out of focus. This is a special property of this lens.
Gordon Smith > This is a shot of a lesser-known waterfall in Zion national Park. It is very quiet and private.
Gordon Smith > Zion waterfall.
Gordon Smith > These are the Towers of the Virgin. Although these are readily accessible, easily seen from the museum, they are not photographed as much as they deserve. This shot was taken at dawn on Memorial Day after a storm. The clouds were clearing. I used neutral density filters to reduce the light getting into my camera, allowing me to use a shutter speed of 30 seconds. This made the clouds blend and blur beautifully.
Gordon Smith > No More Water.
Gordon Smith > From the east entrance of Zion, this beautiful striated rock stands out as a great place to stop. Notice the small pinion pine growing from the rock.
Gordon Smith > Subway Cascades #1
Gordon Smith > Subway Cascades #2 Notice the small amount of water flowing and compare this to my shots of the subway during a snowstorm in this same gallery.
